Appraisal of the Role of Cattle, Poultry, Piggery and Fishery Sub-Sectors to Sustainable Economic Development in Nigeria: 1982-2014

Nigeria is the largest crude oil exporting country in Africa and the sixth in the world. Despite the enormous natural and human resource endowments, the country have continuously settled on its huge crude oil resource deposit as the main source of revenue generation, thus, driving a monoculture economy. The main objective of the research as the result of the above was to assess the role of the contribution of the selected livestock sub-sectors (poultry, cattle, piggery and fishery production) to sustainable economic development in Nigeria. To actualize the above objective, multivariate regression model was used to run a multiple regression on data gathered. The findings of the study demonstrated that apart from pork production (λ 3 ) which negate the apriori expectation of having positive sign, beef production (λ 1 ), chicken meat production (λ 2 ), and fish (export) production (λ 4 ) parameters have positive signs.
