Appraisal of the Role of Cattle, Poultry, Piggery and Fishery Sub-Sectors to Sustainable Economic Development in Nigeria: 1982-2014

Nigeria is the largest crude oil exporting country in Africa and the sixth in the world. Despite the enormous natural and human resource endowments, the country have continuously settled on its huge crude oil resource deposit as the main source of revenue generation, thus, driving a monoculture economy. The main objective of the research as the result of the above was to assess the role of the contribution of the selected livestock sub-sectors (poultry, cattle, piggery and fishery production) to sustainable economic development in Nigeria. To actualize the above objective, multivariate regression model was used to run a multiple regression on data gathered. The findings of the study demonstrated that apart from pork production (λ3) which negate the apriori expectation of having positive sign, beef production (λ1), chicken meat production (λ2), and fish (export) production (λ4) parameters have positive signs. The study recommendations include diversifying the revenue base of the country to economically efficient livestock sub-sectors like poultry, cattle, piggery and fishery production sub-sectors and that effort should be made by the government, stakeholders and individual farmers to address the production challenges hampering output of these sub-sectors in other to ensure sustainable economic development of Nigeria. Summarily, the study show that there are enormous potentialities available in the livestock sub-sectors under study; and that even though the contribution of these agriculture sub-sectors to sustainable economic development are un-noticed probably because there are not the traditional sources of revenue generation in Nigeria there can serve as launch pad for the country to diversify and sustain its economic development.

The above is an abstract to my thesis written on the above topic, I shall be rolling in articles from this refined research study on to my blog - Nigerian Ecoinfo ( www.nigeriaeconomyinfo.blogspot.com ) but before then I advice you choose the area (sub-sector) you will be interested in as I shall be unveiling the roles and opportunities available in these sub-sectors.
